Entry #4 - Tiredness

Hey guys! I wanted to discuss what it means to be tired and how to combat it. Everyone has their moments of being tired... Especially in college it can become so easy to fall in a constant state of being mentally or physically exhausted. Being mentally exhausted is when your brain can no longer focus, you start to not remember basic information. Being physically exhausted is when your body becomes heavy, and you feel sluggish. Both are horrible feelings in the overall scheme of life. To be honest with everyone, I am mentally exhausted... Being in college is hard. I know many many people have made it through college, but this is my first semester and I feel like I'm having more anxiety attacks now than I ever will in the future. I'm just trying to learn how to control my sleeping habits and other tips and tricks along the way.

There are many tips and tricks that can help to just get a good night's rest. Getting the right amount of sleep vary for every person. Everyone should have an idea if they are a morning people or a night owl. Morning people find enjoyment of waking up early in the morning and have a ton of energy throughout the day, while going to bed earlier. Night owls are the complete opposite, they go to bed late and have a hard time waking up in the morning. These are just from over the years getting these from friends and family members throughout the years.

  • Have a Sleeping Schedule
    • Having a sleeping schedule can help your body and mind have a routine. When the mind is at rest at the same time of the day, it will become a habit and the mind will relax at that time helping with sleep. If you go to bed at 2 a.m. on monday and 9 p.m. on tuesday, it will feel unbalanced and you will feel tired throughout the day.
  • Napping habits
    • When taking naps it is helping you gain energy or it can make you more tired. If you take a 20 minute power nap, your body tends to be rejuvenated and refreshed. When the body is at rest for 3 to 4 hours the body hasn't been moving for that long... It will feel as if it made you more sluggish and more tired. Being smart about when you take naps and how long you take a nap can benefit for sleeping at night.
  • Yoga/Stretching
    • Yoga is a wonderful way to help the body and mind to relax. It both stretches the muscles and focuses on breathing. Breathing helps the body relax by bringing oxygen into the blood and having the blood flow to all the organs bringing oxygen to them as well.
  • Lighting
    • The lighting in your room and even from electronics can wake up your brain. Having a bright light on can turn from a second of checking a text message into an hour extra of brain activity. Thoughts will race through the mind and can be hard to turn off. Having dim lights at night can help navigate through the house and putting away the phone an hour before you go to bed.
  • Food and Beverage Intake
    • Watching what you eat can impact your sleeping habit. Sugar and caffeine are the main sources that people go towards to help stay away. If your drink a caffeinated drink you will be up for another hour or it could be 3 hours. Sugar ultimately does the same thing, a huge burst of energy to allow yourself to stay awake for a while. When trying to go to sleep you are doing the exact opposite when consuming sugar or caffeine.
Sleep is very important for every single person. It isn't something that we should be slacking off on and definitely something we need to focus our attention on. We can't function without it, straight and simple. If you guys have your own method of getting a good night's sleep let me know. I am still experimenting with all of this and hope you guys have your own method that works for you. Thanks guy for reading and don't forget to Create some English.

  1. Im a night owl. And can't go to sleep before 11 PM. I dont know why. Maybe that's my longstanding habit . I think most people know the importance of getting enough sleep. But, sometime they so busy. So, It's kind of hard to do it. I also love to do yoga. It's very good for health.

  2. Love the article. Yet I don't think someone with insomnia like me could ever hope to get a decent nights rest... However as controversial as it is right now I have found that indica a strain of weed actually can put me asleep and stay asleep, the effects do depend on the strain though like the indica strain I take to sleep only causes drowsiness, instead of hallucinations. Personally it helps me sleep don't know if anyone else has insomnia though.

  3. Hey Claire! I am definitely right there with you, anxiety attacks and such. Shortly after the classes started at the middle of the semester I pondered whether I had bitten off more than I chew. I even considered withdrawing from some of the classes. For me, I have learned to prioritize a list, focus on the highest priority items and get that completed. Once that is done, then I move on to the next item. It's not always easy, especially with a lot of moving pieces such as the projects at work I am responsible for completing, but it does help me to keep moving rather than get overwhelmed with the anxiety. For sleep, I tend to only sleep for five or six hours a night, which I suppose could be called schedule, but I do take power naps, which seem to help. Looking back, naps seem a luxury I never had time for them when I was younger. These past few years it has been surprising how refreshing a 20 minute nap can be. For beverages, I am probably the worst...I will drink coffee up until the time I go to sleep. I usually chalk it up to sheer exhaustion that I can be asleep in a matter of minutes after my head hit the pillow. :)
