Extra Credit - Do We Really Know?
Hey guys! How is everything? I hope it is going good because we are so close to the wonderful holiday season. There is a lot of snowbirds (old folk) coming into Arizona for the winter to escape the dreadful snow in their home state, so driving in Arizona is beginning to suck. But besides that it is becoming a magical holiday season.
In my English 102 class my professor decided that we were going to watch a video in class. This video is called "Capitalism: A love Story". Michael Moore is the director, star, producer, and much more of this video, which also means he has majority of the say in the movie. He has a particular way on how to go about the topic discussed within the video. It of course discusses Capitalism, because well that's in the title. But he talks about the effects from capitalism in his personal experience and others experience with it.
Capitalism has been more of a disaster within the United States because it has hurt the American People. One topic discussed is how there are businesses out there that profit from the death of their workers. A woman, named Irma Johnson, discusses how Amegy Bank in Texas made $1,500,000 because of Dan (the husband's) death. He had died from cancer, and the business that he worked for took out a secret life policy and put themselves as the beneficiary... It sounds horrible, because it is. How can you feel good about yourself when one of your workers has passed away and you get a million dollars richer???? To majority of these bigger companies, you are more valuable dead than alive.
There was also the topic of how pilots are in charge of hundreds of lives every single day, doing horrible, long hours. I mean they are in planes for long periods of time flying a huge metal plane and have a lot of lives at stake. They aren't living the dream.... They love to fly, that's why that is their career, but they don't get paid nearly what they should. An example that Michael Moore uses is that Taco Bell managers make more money than pilots... WOW. Eye opening. The news also focuses on the actions of the pilots rather than what they have been through. Most of the pilots are in debt, because they don't get paid enough to pay for their needs and to pay of the loans. It's a horrible system in that way.
Another subject that was talked about was how people are losing their homes. The government can take away your home in a matter of days if you do not pay the monthly bill. In the video it shows how a family received a paper stating they had 30 days until they were kicked out. around the 20th day the law enforcement came to remove them from the home, even though majority of they stuff hadn't been moved yet. That family didn't get the whole 30 days even before they moved out, the home was sold to someone else. Homeowners are even victims of capitalism.
Lastly, the video reaches out to those that are religious. Michael Moore talks to priests about what capitalism means to them, and they all stated the same thing, it was dangerous and evil. How can priests even say that???? Unless... they actually meant it and believed in it. That is the only reason they would say this. Believing that America's system and incorporating God into it is wrong, because it isn't what Jesus would have wanted. Putting capitalism into this perspective has now even been put into the mind of those that are religious.
This video talks to so many people within this video. It talks to married couples and those that work in big corporations and how their death could benefit the company. It shows their worth and frankly it isn't fair. It also talks to homeowners and how scary it can be by not paying the bill and how you can be easily kicked out. Lastly, to those of faith. The leaders of churches discuss how dangerous capitalism is and how it shouldn't exist, but it does. Yes there are people that benefit from capitalism, but for middle class citizens you are screwed. I don't know guys if you have a different opinion let me know! I want to hear from you. Have a good one a don't forget to create some english.
